'Once in a Blue Moon,' Our Satellite's True Color

The color of the Moon has been studied for years.  Lunar color is a subtle, yet fascinating phenomenon.  Just when it seemed that we had an explanation, complications would arise.  We now think we have a reasonable explanation for it.  So, why is the Moon gray?  Or to ask the question “scientifically”— What factors account for the range of spectral reflectance seen on the Moon?

Early Apollo astronauts were very impressed with the Moon’s lack of color.  During Apollo 8 (first mission to orbit the Moon in 1968) Jim Lovell remarked, “The Moon is basically gray – no color.”   The Apollo 10 crew was struck by the numerous brownish hues exhibited by the Moon – from a bright tan to a dark, chocolate brown.  When the first astronauts landed and walked on the Moon (Apollo 11), they had an even closer view.  Buzz Aldrin mentioned that although the surface color was basically gray, he could see interesting colors within some rocks outside the LM window.  During the EVA, Aldrin mentioned to Neil Armstrong that he had seen “some purple rocks.”  Purple? — perhaps so.

The Apollo 15 crew was surprised on their 1971 mission to catch a fleeting glimpse of green on the surface (in film shot earlier by crews on the lunar surface, color was too subtle to be seen). When they raised the sun visors of their helmets to again see that the soil was gray, the disappointment in their voices was palpable.  But then, at the very next station, they again saw a flash of green and this time, it was still green when the visors were raised.  Despite the predictable remarks about “green cheese,” this lunar material – consisting of volcanic glass erupted from deep (> 400 km depth) within the Moon under high pressure – was still green when brought back to Earth.

During their second lunar traverse in 1972, the crew of Apollo 17 found orange soil at Shorty crater.  Also volcanic glass, this soil is made up of tiny (~50 micron) beads of orange glass, again erupted from great depth.  It is orange (as opposed to the Apollo 15 green glass) because of its relatively high titanium content.  It is mixed with black glass beads, of identical composition, but in this case, partly crystallized.  Subsequent study of the Apollo samples have found volcanic glass fragments in almost every color in the spectrum, from red to yellow and brown in addition to the two described above.

At this point, it is tempting to ascribe lunar color seen at a distance to the intimate mixing of a variety of colors present at fine scale.  But this is not quite correct.  Most returned lunar samples are also gray, ranging from a very dark charcoal to a light, almost white-gray shade.  Minor variations can be seen as a result of the presence of certain minerals.  In particular, the mineral olivine (an Mg- and Fe-rich silicate) is abundant in the lunar crust and is often green or a brownish yellow.  Ilmenite (and iron- and titanium oxide) is bluish-black and probably the source of the  “purple” Aldrin saw in some rocks during the Apollo 11 EVA.  Moreover, the astronauts could sometimes see significant color units from space.  After his surface visit, Apollo 17 astronaut Jack Schmitt (in orbit) saw orange material, excavated by small craters on the southwestern rim of the Serenitatis basin.  He suggested that this material might be related to the orange soil collected at the landing site a few days earlier.

Interestingly, one can detect subtle color differences on the Moon with telescopes and from spacecraft.  Although the Moon appears gray at first glance, one notices different hues of gray in certain places.  The dark Mare Tranquillitatis on the eastern near side is a noticeably darker and “bluish-gray” compared to the dark mare plains just to the north in Mare Serenitatis.  Part of the reason the Moon looks whitish-gray in the sky can be attributed to the fact that it is the brightest object in the night sky – dazzling the eye when first looked at (either with your naked eye or through a telescope).  Spacecraft views also reveal color differences.  It is common practice for lunar scientists to work with “false color” composite images, where color variations are “stretched” to extreme degrees to exaggerate differences in order to make them easier to work with.  The typical “false color” version of the near side of the Moon shows brilliantly colored “blue” and “red” maria; these color units do not coincide with mare-highland boundaries.  The received wisdom is that the different color units in the lunar maria represent lava flows of differing composition. That some lavas are enriched in titanium was a major finding from the Apollo sample studies.  Interestingly, these high-titanium lavas come from “blue” regions in the maria.  Initially, this was only an empirical correlation but we now know that it is the presence of ilmenite (the iron-, titanium-rich oxide) in these basalts that makes them “blue.”

It should be noted that color differences on the Moon are extremely subtle, requiring intensive image processing to display them clearly.  Typically, color differences on the Moon are less than about one percent or so.  We are able to see these differences with a careful look, but mapping the detailed boundaries of individual lava flows requires image processing to make the “false color” composites.

The “true” color of the Moon is a brownish (i.e., reddish) gray, but overall, the surface is fairly neutral in tone.  If the Earth had no atmosphere, hydrosphere or biosphere, it too would be largely a brownish-gray, as its crust is made up (more or less) of the same silicate and oxide minerals as the Moon (in slightly different proportions).  It is the weathering effects of air and water and biological activity at the Earth’s surface that makes it so colorful.  The Moon – having none of these processes – displays the “true color” of the rocky planets of the Solar System.  The dominant mineral in the lunar crust is plagioclase, a calcium/aluminum-rich silicate mineral.  Plagioclase is gray.  Thus, the dusty surface of the Moon, derived from plagioclase-rich rocks, is likewise gray.  When we talk about “red” and “blue” in lunar terms (as in “blue mare basalts”), we mean bluer, or less reddish, than comparable mare deposits elsewhere on the Moon.  So in reality, lunar color differences are really just varying degrees of reddish gray, some more so than others.

And what of the blue Moon?  As Conan the Barbarian might say, “But that is another story…..”

Project Gemini comes to life

Early in the Space Age, there were some who firmly believed this was simply impossible. Tom Stafford took this picture on the evening of December 15, 1965. He was in the starboard seat of Gemini VI-A, commanded by Mercury veteran Wally Schirra, and in the fifth orbit of a one day flight they successfully rendezvoused with Frank Borman and Jim Lovell on-board Gemini VII. Borman and Lovell had three days remaining on a fourteen day flight, a world record at the time. The successful closed-loop rendezvous of piloted spacecraft was an essential skill that needed proving if the scenario in preparation for Apollo lunar landings was going to work [NASA/JSC/ASU].

On 23 March 1965, the first of ten crewed Gemini spacecraft was launched carrying it's crew of two astronauts, Gus Grissom and John Young. The NASA Johnson Space Center and the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University today proudly unveil the Project Gemini Online Digital Archive. Project Gemini (1964-1966) was the second United States human spaceflight program, after Project Mercury (1960-1963). The overarching goal was to test systems and operations critical to the Apollo program (1961-1975), conceived with the purpose of "landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth". Specific goals of Gemini included: perfecting rendezvous and docking between two crewed spacecraft, successfully undertaking extravehicular activities (space walking), perfecting precise reentry procedures, understanding the effects of the space environment on humans, and testing systems for Apollo. The Gemini spacecraft were launched on modified Titan II intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) to low Earth orbit.

The successful NASA Gemini missions indeed provided critical space operations experience and directly enabled all American space achievements that followed, in particular the Apollo Moon landings and the first American space station, Skylab (1973-1974). Below is a short list of "firsts" from the Gemini missions.

- First US extravehicular activity (EVA)

- First EVA recovery and return of materials exposed to the space environment for long durations (Agena micrometeorite package)
 
- First use of fuel cells on a spacecraft

- First operation of two crewed US spacecraft simultaneously

- Longest US space mission until Skylab (Gemini 7, nearly two weeks)

- Development of coherent EVA techniques (culminating in Gemini 12)

- First on-orbit rendezvous and docking

- First demonstration of an orbital tether

- First demonstration of the scientific utility of systematic targeted Earth observation--these are some of the earliest color photos of Earth from orbit.

Forty years after Apollo 13

Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex is holding events in April in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission, which was coined "a successful failure" back in the day and turned into a motion picture in 1995.

On April 10, the complex will have a special "Astronaut Encounter," featuring Jim Lovell and Fred Haise, the surviving crew of Apollo 13 (Lunar Module Pilot and Apollo 9 astronaut Jack Swigert died in 1982). The astronauts will tell spaceflight stories, including their experiences aboard Apollo 13, which included an explosion en route to the moon, four days in space using the lunar module as a lifeboat and a journey around the far side of the moon on their gut-wrenching trip back to Earth. The appearance starts at 10:30 a.m.

On April 9, Charlie Duke, who was backup lunar module pilot for Apollo 13, will be signing copies of his book Moonwalker at the complex. Two years later, Duke flew to the moon on Apollo 16 and became the 10th man to walk on the moon. Books will be available for purchase at the complex's Space Shop, and the book-signing will begin at 3:30.

Lovell recalls ill-fated Apollo 13

"We were going to a place called Fra Mauro and it was about in the center of the moon," Lovell told the rapt teenagers. "It was going to be different than the first two landings because they landed in the (flat areas) ... but now they wanted us to land in the hills and the highlands."

Instead, NASA's third planned moon landing turned into a life-or-death struggle to return to Earth after an oxygen tank exploded and the crew lost its oxygen supply and electrical power.

"We were in sort of deep trouble," Lovell told the students, whom he encouraged Wednesday to pursue science even if it meant reaching beyond their high school classes.

As a young boy growing up in Milwaukee, Lovell said he consumed all the information he could about astronomy, physics and engineering. His wife, Marilyn, who said she met him in high school, remembered sitting with his mother on their porch watching him try to set off homemade rockets in a nearby lot.

"We would both say, 'He's crazy, this is insane,'" said Marilyn Lovell, laughing. "But, he just kept at it."

Captain Jim Lovell, the commander of Apollo 13, spoke at Adler Planetarium about the mission, which went from near disaster to unbelievable rescue.

Lovell kicked off the planetarium's month long "Shoot for the Moon" celebration. He told the story to students from the city's Air Force Academy High School.

"About 200,000 miles out as you might expect we had that explosion. And right away we didn't know what the situation was but as it turned out we had an oxygen tank that blew up," said Capt. Lovell.

The explosion lead to what many call NASA's greatest hour. The spacecraft had lost two of its three oxygen tanks and electrical power but somehow mission control had the astronauts jerry rig their command and lunar modules for a heart stopping ride home. Four days later they landed safely and the world sighed in relief.

Cernan & Lovell: Retreat from Moon 'disasterous'

Gene Cernan (Apollo 10 & Apollo 17) and Jim Lovell (Apollo 8 & Apollo 13); the veteran Gemini and Apollo astronauts decried the proposed cancellation of the Constellation program in widely circulated news reports, last week.

Gene Cernan and Jim Lovell created more buzz about the Moon this past week than the latest rumor about the next release in the 'Twilight' saga. Their dire warnings to the Royal Society in London concerning the president's proposed cancellation of NASA's Constellation program continues to be picked up by every news organ on the planet. It's a testimony to the respect, even reverence, still held for the only men to travel to the vicinity of the Moon twice during the Apollo era (1968-1972).

As lunar module pilot on Apollo 10, a dress rehearsal two months before Apollo 11, Cernan traveled to within 15 kilometers of the Sea of Tranquility and four years officially spent more time on the lunar surface than any single individual, becoming the last man to walk on the Moon in command of Apollo 17 in 1972.

Similarly situated in the second seat of Apollo 8, traveling with Frank Borman and Bill Anders, dazzled the world in December 1968 when they became the first humans to travel beyond Earth orbit, circling the Moon ten times before returning to Earth in December 1968.

Lovell's dream of walking on the Moon, in command of Apollo 13, was dashed forty years ago next month when a service module tank explosion collapsed the command module's life support system. Fortunately, an ingenious and unplanned use of the resources of the Apollo 13 lunar module's engine and life support system returned the crew back to Earth.

Yet another generation was afforded the hair-raising experience of the near-disaster of the aborted Apollo 13 Moon landing and its single swing behind the Moon when the motion picture "Apollo 13" (starring Tom Hanks as Lovell) premiered in June 1995.

Though it was already a more obscure but oft-repeated phrase, Lovell's initial report of the on-board explosion has never been a more popular part of our heritage of language.

"Houston, we have a problem"is now firmly situated as the absolute model for a no-frills, understated report of disaster. Perhaps this is the reason why when Lovell called something 'catastrophic,' last week in London it drew attention, and even a second glance; something rare in a world even more filled with noise than during the tumultuous Apollo era.

Mark Whittington of Associated Content followed-up on the original BBC interview, attendant to Lovell and Cernan (together with Dr. Armstrong) and their private meeting with the Royal Society.

"Personally, I think it will have catastrophic consequences in our ability to explore space and the spin-offs we get from space technology," Lovell said. "They haven't thought through the consequences."

Eugene Cernan, part of the 1972 Apollo 17 mission, said the U.S. has a responsibility to lead the world in space exploration and technology and that he hopes people will be back on the moon "sooner than later."

"I'm quite disappointed that I'm still the last man on the moon. I thought we'd have gone back long before now," Cernan said. "But I am absolutely committed to the fact that we will go back at some time.""I think America has a responsibility to maintain its leadership in technology and its moral leadership... to seek knowledge. Curiosity's the essence of human existence."

President Obama's decision to cancel the Constellation return to the Moon program has run into a firestorm of criticism which seems to have caught the Administration by surprise. President Obama has scheduled a "Space Summit" in Florida next month to try to explain his reasons for canceling Constellation.

The problem is that not only have the Apollo missions to the Moon become part of the American story, a source of pride and proof of American exceptionalism, the fact that Americans have not been back to the Moon in almost forty years has become a silent source of shame.
Though any cancellation of the Constellation program is often reported as a done-deal, NASA and American space policy are officially unchanged, and work continues, even on the Ares 1. NASA is a "creature of Congress," and President Obama's "decision' to permanently postpone travel to the lunar surface awaits a change approved or rejected by Congress.

Though Constellation was originally a pay-as-you-go proposition, as a part of the Vision for Space Exploration set out by President George W. Bush in 2004, the proposed elimination of Constellation immediately polarized an Internet-active "space community," along with interests in regions and industrial sectors.

Iconography, in a handbag

They are only human, after all. Talented Talent, and it is a reminder marketing and those who market are talented people, also. People in politics who are smart, admittedly rare though they may be, catch on to the fact and depart from orthodoxy, sooner or later. Business is about survival not discretionary spending. Even if you make handbags, the product may be a discretionary item for the consumer but sales must be a recurring thing if you are to survive.

Entertainment, not information, is the coin of the realm.

Frank Borman to Address EAA

OSHKOSH - Cmdr. Frank Borman will give the keynote address Wednesday at the Wright Brothers Memorial Banquet, sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association.

Borman was commander of Apollo 8 in December 1968 when it became the first manned craft to orbit the moon. The 40th anniversary of that launch is Dec. 21.

Borman and Jim Lovell and William Anders spent six days in space and orbited the Moon 10 times, conducting research that ensure the success of Apollo 11 seven months later.

Coming as it did at the end of what many believe to have been the "incredible year," highlighted by the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King and Senator Robert Kennedy, the Apollo 8 crew read from Genesis, during a Christmas Eve broadcast from lunar orbit.

In The Shadow Of The Moon

Alan Bean of the Apollo 12 crew has always thought of himself as one of the more fearful astronauts. Lift-off sent his heart rate shooting up to 144 beats a minute. In contrast, the heart of John Young, the sleepy-eyed slow talker who captained the Apollo 16 flight, kept ticking away at a steady 70.

So astronauts are human - something that didn't dawn on the rest of us until Tom Wolfe dramatised the backstage story of America's first manned space missions in The Right Stuff. Since then, we've known the astronauts best through their on-screen alter egos. The real-life models have merged into that emblematic figure - Neil Armstrong setting foot on the moon while intoning those sonorous words: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

So this documentary, which combines film taken during the space voyages with footage of the era and interviews with the astronauts, arrives late in the day. Yet just a few minutes in, you begin to realise that the long gap between recollection and reality makes it all the more revealing.

The director, David Sington, has gathered crew members from every Apollo mission that flew to the moon and these men, with their space careers long behind them, prove a wry and reflective bunch who rejoice in bringing the wisdom of hindsight to their experiences. They belong to a select company. The Apollo program ended in 1972, which means they are still the only humans to have walked on the lunar surface.

All were former test pilots and they remind us that if they hadn't gone to the moon, they would have gone to Vietnam. Gene Cernan, who captained the last Apollo flight, still sounds rueful about this. "They were fighting my war for me," he says of the test pilots with whom he trained. He remembers, too, that they were being shot down on combat missions while he was front-page news as the latest spaceman.

The footage filmed by the astronauts has been transferred to high-definition tape and looks spectacular. None of them has a gift for poetry, but one finds the right words when he comments on the jewel-like nature of Earth hanging in the blackness of space. Others talk about how fragile it looks. There's nothing like leaving the Earth's atmosphere, I imagine, to sharpen your sense of attachment to the one place in the cosmos you can call home.

The moon elicits less poetry. Michael Collins, who flew with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on Apollo 11, remembers it as a hostile, scary place. That was from above. He had no chance to get closer for he was the one who stayed aboard the spacecraft. Was he disappointed? It seems not. Rather, he relished his unique perspective. He was able to look down on Earth with its billions of people and on the moon with just two.

He also knew he could return to Earth - unlike Jim Lovell and the rest of the crew of Apollo 13, whose mission was cut short by a systems failure. The moon ceased to matter as they became consumed by the question of how to get home. Home. For all the astronauts, it seems, their trips into space intensified their love of Earth. As for their spiritual nourishment, some credit their lunar adventures with awakening or renewing their interest in religion. Others, such the humorous and very likeable Collins, say merely that after you've flown to the moon some of our terrestrial squabbles don't seem nearly as important.
