Ben Franklin Academy steers GRAIL MoonKAM

It's not easy coming up with a hands-on approach to astronomy.

But Jason Cochrane, who teaches sixth-grade science at the new Ben Franklin Academy charter school in Douglas County, came upon a unique opportunity through a NASA program that launched two satellites to orbit the moon with instruments intended solely for educational purposes.

Cochrane learned about GRAIL — short for Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory — while attending a conference of the National Science Teachers Association in Seattle, where some colleagues did a presentation on the program. He immediately signed up his class for the exercise.

In a matter of weeks, students were learning how to identify a geographical location on the moon they wanted to photograph, and how to determine its latitude and longitude and then compute when one of the two satellites would orbit in prime position to take the best picture of the moonscape.

"Within our curriculum, it calls for students to learn about lunar features, mountain ranges, craters, phases of the moon," Cochrane said. "But I've taught about the moon for the last six years, and it's not as interesting as it could be. It's difficult to do anything hands-on when you're talking about space."

When it finally came time to signal the satellites to start shooting photos, his sixth-graders eagerly looked up projected orbits and determined which one would pass closest to their chosen lunar location at the optimum time and be in the best position to snap a picture.

Many of the photos already have been posted to the site.

But Cochrane added a unique local kicker to the exercise. He arranged with Lockheed Martin, which worked on the satellites, to have an engineer who worked on GRAIL visit the class and wrap up the unit.

UAZ prepares for national space club

SpaceVision 2009, the largest fully student-run space conference in the nation, will take place at the UA, Nov. 12-15.

The UA chapter of the Students for the Exploration and Development of Space club submitted a bid to host the conference at last years conference at Texas A&M, said Joshua Nelson, chairman of the club’s national organization and a recent UA aerospace engineering graduate.

“It’s our organization’s national conference so each chapter voted and we got elected,” Nelson said.

Planning for the event began immediately and 60-member space club is prepared for this weekend, Nelson said.

“We want the public to understand that there’s more to space than NASA,” said Kyle Stephens, president of the UA’s club and conference organizer.

Organizers say they expect close to 200 people to attend the event and are on track to get that number.

Robotics teams goes for 'lunacy' in LA

The robotics team from West Ranch High School journeyed to Long Beach March 13 and 14 to compete in the Los Angeles Regional FIRST Robotics Competition.

Following a "lunacy" theme, 61 high school teams from Southern California, Arizona, Brazil and Chile challenged each other on a "lunar crater" roughly the size of a tennis court, scoring points by launching balls called "moon rocks," "empty cells" and "super cells" into the containers of the opposing teams' robots.

The West Ranch team placed 13th among 62 schools and made it to the first round of the elimination playoffs.

Enhanced Alabama Gravitational Lunar Effect

Operation E.A.G.L.E is not a military project. It is a scientific endeavor undertaken by 16-year-old Rebecca England, a sophomore at Demopolis High School in Alabama. While many teenage girls are focused on celebrity lifestyles, teen chat rooms and the latest trends in funky fashions, Rebecca has her eyes, well, on the moon.

Operation E.A.G.L.E. stands for Enhanced Alabama Gravitational Lunar Effect, a science project Rebecca developed for the International Science and Engineering Fair in Atlanta, GA.

Although Rebecca didn't beat out the competition at the science fair (there were 27 projects in the earth and planetary science category alone), her ambitious undertaking attracted the attention of several magazines and created a buzz across the exhibit hall floor.

The purpose of the project, said Rebecca, was to determine how far, if at all, the moon's gravitational pull could be measured on the surface of the earth, particularly in her hometown of Demopolis.

"I got the idea one day when I was on the Internet looking for ideas for a science fair project on ocean tides," she said. "I came across the Operation E.A.G.L.E idea at random when I saw something about how the moon's gravitational pull on the earth's surface in Russia, or someplace, had a fluctuation pull of 18 inches. I thought it would be cool to measure the lunar gravitational pull in Demopolis, Alabama."

Astronomy Becoming More Popular For UK Students

Students of all ages are showing their enthusiasm for astronomy, with more people than ever choosing to study it at GCSE level. In a talk on Tuesday 1 April at the Royal Astronomical Society National Astronomy Meeting in Belfast, Professor Iwan Williams of Queen Mary University of London, will describe the new syllabus for this qualification that has seen the number of students taking it rise from around 250 in the early 1990s to more than 1200 today.

The increasingly popular course began life as ‘O’ level Astronomy in the early 1980s and is taken by students in schools but also by adults who study the qualification in evening classes. It is one of the only qualifications in astronomy available at a level below an undergraduate degree course.

The course has been revised recently and an updated and modified specification will be taught from 2009 with the first cohort of students taking the new exam in 2011. The new course will be divided into two units: Understanding the Universe and Exploring the Universe.

Understanding the Universe is made up of four topics: Earth, Moon and Sun; Planetary Systems, Stars and Galaxies and Cosmology. Students study aspects of astronomy from lunar and solar eclipses to what makes the Earth (and perhaps planets around stars) habitable and the prospect of life elsewhere.

In the second unit, Exploring the Universe the students are expected to carry out practical observations to study astronomical phenomena for themselves. These can vary from simple daylight observations needing no specialist equipment, such as the use of a shadow stick, to those requiring more equipment such as a photographic record of a lunar eclipse.

Professor Williams comments, “It’s wonderful to see so many people choosing to study astronomy. Students are excited and inspired by the wider Universe and this draws many of them to careers in science and engineering in later life. The new specification brings in cutting-edge ideas and offers a challenge to learners of all abilities.”

While working on the lunar lander project has continued to be challenging and exciting, Nienaber said the most rewarding projects he has been a part of occurred after the Space Shuttle Columbia burned up on reentry in 2003. He worked on a team that created tools and techniques to repair the Shuttle’s thermal protection system while in orbit.

Nienaber said he has “one of the coolest jobs” he could imagine, and wanted to share his enthusiasm for his profession to Lindsay Holy Family students. He wanted to get the students excited about science, technology and engineering.

“Most importantly, students in rural America need to hear from people that have these jobs and believe that they really can do anything they set their minds to,” Nienaber said. “I didn’t consider myself an exceptional student, and I’m not sure I really did believe when I was in school that my career could have led to involvement in developing a lunar lander. So it is all about giving them ideas on what they could do.”
