Apollo engineer's four decades on New Frontier

Davidsville, Pennsylvania native Lee Wible Jr., 67, spent more than four decades in the country’s space program often training astronauts or in mission control during Apollo missions to the moon.

When astronauts stepped safely outside their spacecraft to conduct scientific tests, collect rock samples or to just generally push the limits of human exploration, it was thanks in part to engineering work Wible had done on their portable life support systems (PLSS.)

“Some of those EVAs (extra-vehicular activities) were in excess of seven hours,” he said. “That was pushing right to the bitter end. That was the whole thing — exploration,” he said.

During some of the later moon missions in the early 1970s (Apollo 14-17), Wible was often one of the engineers in the back room of mission control in Houston, Texas, talking with the astronauts while they walked the moon or rode the Lunar Rover to various geological formations.

A team of six men — often armed only with stacks of paper, pens and slide rules — would be sitting in the mission control room nearly 239,000 miles away from an astronaut eyeing up an interesting rock formation or meteorite crater.

They were responsible for monitoring every movement an astronaut made outside the spacecraft.

Other groups of flight controllers were responsible for almost every conceivable stage of the mission — from lift-off of the massive Saturn V rocket to landing on the moon in the lunar module.

“They’d have to ask permission to go over and we’d go to work figuring if they could get there and back,” he said.

The controllers would radio back to the astronaut that he either had enough consumables (air, water and power) to get to the formation and back to the lunar module or not.

His position’s radio call sign was often EVA-2 or EVA-COM (for consumables.)

“There was no margin for error,” he said. “It was like biting your fingernails for 24 hours.”

Has Arianespace surpassed the U.S.?

"American Exceptionalism" isn't politically correct these days, though not so unpopular as many believe. The old fashioned idea of being ahead of the game in spaceflight may not just be threatened by Russia, China, India or the European Commission. State-subsidized Arianespace, United Space Alliance of the ESA, boasts of being unsurpassed.

As the Russian Federation's Soyuz facility is being completed with impressive speed in French Guiana, now might be a good time for those concerned with a less fashionable aspect of America's confused space ambitions to take note of the language Arianespace uses to describe itself.

Without even mentioning the time when the U.S. made the Space Shuttle an end unto itself, abandoning Saturn boosters, some took an unnatural pleasure when, during the years that followed, Arianespace, while testing the largest booster in production, blew at least two Ariane V rockets to smithereens.

After the Challenger disaster in 1986, NASA lost Department. of Defense and a stacked up manifest of commercial satellite launch customers, never fully recovered.

Today Ariane V regularly launches eight payloads at a crack, and nearly eight times a year. In the press release language below, Arianespace offhandedly casually adds Soyuz to it's own stable of available rockets.

Perhaps their claim is not just rhetorical, just an over-selling point, and the U.S. is not just threatened with being surpassed in space, but already was surpassed by competitors, long ago.

A last night on Earth spent outdoors

Via Florida Today's Flame Trench, Cape Canaveral hosts, at least for one last night, the Atlas V at last preparing to begin the LRO and LCROSS missions, American's first "moon shot" since Lunar Propector in 1999

Patrick Air Force Station, Cape Canaveral, FL - June 17 - It's first launch opportunity set aside for range tracking to offer a last chance for Endeavour, and STS-127, to launch early Wednesday, the Atlas V carrying its LRO & LCROSS mission payloads was rolled out of United Space Alliance Verticle Integration Facility to pad 41. It is from here mission managers hope it will spend on final night on Earth before embarking on the first U.S. lunar mission since that of Lunar Prospector a decade before, with three of Thursday evening's launch opportunities beginning at 2112 UT.

Ares I new SRB chutes successfully tested

"The three parachutes, each with a 150-foot diameter or about half the size of a football field, slowed a 41,500-pound weight that simulates the size of the Ares I first-stage booster. The parachutes are the largest of their type in the world. The weight and chutes were dropped from a C-17 aircraft at 10,000 feet, and successfully deployed at 4,500 feet above the U.S. Army's Yuma Testing Ground.

"This test marks yet another successful milestone in the development of NASA's Ares I launch vehicle," said Charlie Precourt, ATK Space Systems vice president and general manager of Space Launch Systems. "The teamwork between NASA and the contractors ensures continued success in the development of the next generation crew launch vehicle."

"United Space Alliance at the Kennedy Space Center, who subcontracted with ATK, manufactured the parachutes. Designers modeled the parachutes after the 136-foot diameter ones that currently slow the solid rocket boosters from the space shuttle enough to splash down into the Atlantic Ocean. The new chutes also will slow the Ares I rocket for an Atlantic landing, where the rockets will be recovered, refurbished and reused. "

Boeing: Contrators face layoffs unless NASA moves faster on Constellation

Colorado Springs - March 31 (Reuters) - A senior Boeing official said March 31 American contractors working on manned spaceflight capabilities will have to lay off up to 10,000 workers unless NASA accelerates orders for Constellation.

"The Gap," the period between the end of the Shuttle program in late 2010 and the follow-on Constellation program's first flight in 2015 is a challenge for the companies involved, said Brewster Shaw, vice president and general manager of Boeing Space Exploration.

Shaw said the five biggest contractors in the sector faced combined layoffs of 8,000 to 10,000 workers, the largest among them Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Alliant Techsystems, United Technologies, Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne and United Space Alliance (a Boeing-Lockheed joint venture.

The companies and their smaller suppliers were urging lawmakers and NASA to accelerate work on Ares 5, the cargo heavy-lift booster, as well as Altair, the Constellation's lunar lander., Shaw said.
